I say to my colleague from Illinois that the entire situation we are in revolves around the issue of dark money and having a person on the Court who will sustain that flow. That Citizens United decision was a 5-to-4 decision. Four Justices laid out the case that these unlimited funds--and often secret funds--are corrupting our American political system. And if one wants an example of that corruption, simply look at the vast change--within a short period of years--of the position of our colleagues on the right side of the aisle in regard to the environment. We had many colleagues who were very concerned about carbon pollution coming from the extraction and burning of fossil fuels. They wanted to make sure that we had a sustainable planet to pass on to our children-- our children's children. It was following a Republican tradition of being involved in things like the Environmental Protection Agency creation with President Nixon and the Clean Water Act and Clear Air Act. In a short period of time, like a shallow pool beneath a hot sun, it just evaporated. That concern for the environment just disappeared and dissipated. The result is that today, we have virtually no support to take on this major environmental threat in a bipartisan fashion, and that corresponds to this flow of dark money from the oil and coal billionaires into the campaigns for the Senate in the United States of America.…
