“earlier this week President Clinton finally admitted what most of us have known for quite some time now: Congress is not cutting Medicare. In fact, our effort has been to save Medicare from bankruptcy. When reporters asked the President about those deliberately false television ads that portray Republicans as heartless souls who are allegedly slashing Medicare and Medicaid, he got visibly upset. He acknowledged that the ads are not accurate. He blamed his misstatements on the press. And he said he really liked to be truthful, but he just cannot do it in a 27-second ad. Very interesting, very revealing, and, quite frankly, very sad. Mr. Speaker, it was reported last month that the Medicare trust fund has lost $4.3 billion already this year. The President knows that something must be done, and now he has finally come clean. If he really is committed to start telling the truth about Medicare, he ought to work with us to save Medicare for this generation and for future generations.”
