On the recordJuly 31, 2001
I have to comment on what I am hearing on the other side of the aisle that this side of the aisle is delaying the passage of bills. The same complaints being lodged against the Republican side of the aisle are the same complaints the Republicans lodged against the Democratic side of the aisle during my first 2 years in the Senate. It is deja vu all over again. The fact is, some of us have some major concerns that we would like to have discussed in the Senate. We would like to have our point of view listened to and taken into consideration. For example, the dairy compact was brought up and then withdrawn. I was very upset when this was brought up last time. My State was opposed to the dairy compact because we thought extending it was not in the best interest of our State, but I never had a chance to vote on it because it came up in conference. It was done in that way. I think some of us who are concerned about the dairy compact think it is unfair to the farmers in our respective States.
