“I am pleased that the Senate today has acted to confirm Sheldon Whitehouse to be the U.S. attorney for the district of Rhode Island. It has been almost a year since I first recommended Mr. Whitehouse to the President to fill this post and I am immensely pleased that the Senate has taken its action today in approving his nomination. Shortly, Mr. Whitehouse will take office and as he does so, he faces the great challenges and difficulties that are inherent in law enforcement and judicial system today. Burgeoning crime rates, younger and more violent criminals, conflicting views over sentencing and imprisonment, and frightened and angry victims make for a confusing and emotion-charged environment in which the wheels of justice must turn. I am confident that the dedication to principle, intellect, compassion, and unique skills that Mr. Whitehouse possesses will aid him immeasurably as he carries out the duties of his office. In no small way, I believe that his work will help restore confidence and respect in our oft-beleaguered system of justice.”
