spring freezes, frosts, and excessive rains have caused severe and permanent damage to specialty crops, such as apples, peaches, pears, grapes (including labrusca grapes), strawberries, stone fruits, onions and cherries in New York State. This damage will not only cause a major financial hardship for the farms, but as my friend from South Dakota has already mentioned, the impact will spread throughout the economy of rural communities that depend so heavily on the prosperity of their farms.
