But the fact is, every day in America, someone's husband, son, daughter, or wife is being hurt--a real person--and we in the Senate and this Congress have the power to make their lives a little better, to make sure that an example is set when somebody commits a despicable act, and that it will become a crime that should be--in the greatest country in the world, you should not be able to oppress people because of race, color, creed, religion, or their lifestyle.
