in a great Nation such as ours, we are fortunate to have democratic values and institutions so American citizens can openly and freely voice their opinions and attempt to influence government policies. The abortion debate has been a divisive one for our Nation for many years. People on both sides of this issue feel strongly and have argued, demonstrated, and protested with emotion and passion. We all recognize that the issue is not going to go away anytime soon. One side will not be able to suddenly convince the other to drop its deeply held beliefs. But there is a need and, I believe, an opportunity for us to find common ground and take steps toward a goal all of us share; that is, reducing the number of unintended pregnancies in America. I believe it is both possible and necessary for us to come together and enact effective legislation that will prevent unintended pregnancies, reduce the number of abortions performed, and address unmet health needs of American women.
