Deb Haaland
The Public Record
Deb Haaland is a prominent American politician and member of the Democratic Party, currently serving as the U.S. Secretary of the Interior since March 16, 2021. She previously represented New Mexico's 1st congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from January 3, 2019, until her appointment as Secretary. Haaland is notable for being one of the first two Native American women elected to Congress, marking a significant milestone in U.S. political history.
I am pleased to be leading a bipartisan bill in the House to authorize advanced appropriations for the Indian Health Services.
New Mexico has some of the worst poverty rates in the Nation. In fact, half of our population is Medicaid eligible.
I urge the committee to provide robust funding for victim advocates in state courts, especially for indigenous people experiencing this more than normal, higher rate of sexual assault and domestic violence in urban locations.
What does this mean? When we talk about evidence-based practices and the practices that we are supposed to implement within our tribal clinics, the evidence that is gathered for these practices don't actually represent us.
We have actually built out an MSW practicum program because we are treating these dips with parity.
I wanted to let you know that the Urban Indian Health Institute is funded through IHS for just under $400,000 a year.
The funding has never been adequate and everybody knows that. It will never be adequate.
If one group of people on this planet knows how to stretch the dollar, it is us.
