Sometimes I forget about the fact that I would be the first Native woman. We’re in the throes of this statewide campaign and it’s so busy and we’re trying to be everywhere all at once.

Let’s be clear: Universal childcare is an economic driver for our state. It creates jobs, it allows parents to have the jobs that they need to have. Everyone deserves to have a living wage.

A lot of these issues with substance use are not criminal in nature and so my office of community safety would ensure that we can help law enforcement to focus on crime.

My story is a lot like many New Mexicans — humble beginnings.
