The selection of Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio as Mr. Trump's running mate doubles down on the portion of the party already completely devoted to him rather than reaches out to the broader party and beyond.

It makes this debate really crucial. It's an amazing timing by him, because it is a race for second in Iowa.

In one respect I think the Biden White House would have been happier if he had been charged than for that report to have come out in the midst of a reelection campaign.
