“this morning I rise to recognize National Fire Prevention Week, which is October 9 through October 15. Fire Prevention Week is an opportunity for Americans of all ages to learn more about how to avoid fires and fire injuries and how to respond to them as well. This year's theme, ``Use Candles With Care,'' reflects how proper use of candles can go a long way in protecting one's home and family from the devastating effects of fires. Candle fires in 2002 alone resulted in an estimated 130 deaths. Fire Prevention Week also serves as the time to honor our brave firefighters for risking their lives every day to protect us. They work tirelessly to educate their fellow citizens about fire safety and the importance of being prepared for emergencies. I especially would like to recognize the brave and fine firefighters in my home State of New Hampshire for their efforts to make the granite State's community safer. We owe all firefighters a debt of gratitude for their courage and dedication to keeping us out of harm's way.
