“This is an issue that, only as a consequence of the perseverance of the Senator from Michigan, is now beginning to surface and become visible to all of us. It is the sort of thing that illustrates why we need to be alert for abuse to a single individual. You hear all the time: Well, what is it that this Government is supposed to be doing for the people of the United States of America? The Government is supposed to be standing up for that one individual who has no power at all, who does not have enough money to fly to Washington, and does not know a Senator. This is not as a consequence of some friendship or as a consequence of someone's influence. It is merely as a consequence of the Senator from Michigan saying this is wrong and acting upon it, and I am very grateful to the Senator.”
