On the recordApril 30, 1999
As a third generation military officer, I cannot support an amendment to the Constitution with respect to the flag. I have many compelling reasons to ask that you not support this amendment. My sworn duty as an officer in the United States Air Force to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States lies at the heart of my opposition. This amendment will weaken the Constitution and open the door for more frivolous amendments in the future. I cannot stand by and let this happen without raising my voice. He went on to say: Of the gallant Americans who fought and died in the service of our country within the last 200 years, I tell you this: They did not die defending the flag. They died defending our freedom and the ideals upon which our country was founded. Don't cheapen their sacrifice by supporting this misguided amendment. The flag is strong enough to take care of itself.
