“I was thinking next of offering an amendment that would repeal all taxes. Let us repeal them all. Of course, I do not have to pay for such a proposal in the context of a sense-of-the-Senate resolution--just as some have not paid for their proposals. I must say, for sheer hypocrisy, the presentations I have heard this morning go beyond almost anything I have heard in a long time. I guess it is an indication that we are close to an election. On the one hand, our colleagues on the other side say they want to reduce the deficit and balance the budget. Yet they also propose reductions in income to the Federal Government without a replacement, which is the height of hypocrisy, and it is precisely what got this country into trouble in the 1980's.”
