“Senator Coburn has an objection to legislative directed spending for something called the International Peace Garden. He apparently believes that is unwarranted spending. Many of my colleagues perhaps will not know it by the International Peace Garden, but it is an institution that has been around since the 1930s. It has been supported at various times by the Government of Canada and by the Government of the United States. It exists between the United States and Canada and is a wonderful and a remarkable place. I would encourage all of my colleagues to visit the International Peace Garden at some point. We have a substantial number of buildings at the International Peace Garden that are in some disrepair. The Government of Canada and the Government of Manitoba have agreed to participate in some funding. The amount of funding that is in the appropriations bill is $450,000, and it represents the kind of commitment that our Federal Government has made in the past to maintain this wonderful institution called the International Peace Garden.”
