“I understand that and I appreciate the point the Senator is making. I understand that is why they are likely to defeat this right-to-know amendment--which is a terrible mistake, incidentally, because the question of whether this is a real promise or a broken promise is really a judgment by the American people about: Is this simply more words and more posturing, more politics, or is there something here that is real? The interesting point of all this is the American people, I think, are pretty resilient and pretty strong. You go through 200 years of history in this country, and they move right to left but they always come back to the strong center. And they have a good sense of what is right or wrong and a good sense of what ought to be done.”
