Whatever may have been the arguments favorable for the continuance of the institution of slavery, the destruction of it has rendered them nugatory, and but few of those who once used them could now be found to favor its resurrection.

Now, what we require is a measure of values of just as fixed and absolute a character as any of these.

Or will they sell their birthright for less than a “mess of pottage?” Is it necessary that some great calamity come before an awakening to the reality of the condition will occur?

It is well enough to cry peace when war rages, but the crying will not bring it.
