Without objection, the gentleman from Washington may revise his remarks. There was no objection. Mr. McGOVERN. Mr. Chairman, I move to strike the last word. The Acting CHAIR. The gentleman from Massachusetts is recognized for 5 minutes. Mr. McGOVERN. Mr. Chairman, I rise in very, very, very strong opposition to this amendment gutting the Food for Peace program. Food for peace. I find it somewhat ironic that we have people who oppose food for peace but support weapons for war without giving it a second thought. The fact of the matter is that this amendment would do great harm to some of the most helpless people in the world. I believe very, very strongly on a bipartisan basis that this amendment should be defeated. The Food for Peace program has saved the lives of millions and millions of people. It is a good program. It is something we should be proud of in this country, and on a bipartisan basis, I believe, we are proud of the Food for Peace program. I think we need a big bipartisan vote to defeat this amendment. I appreciated the chairman's remarks earlier, and I thank him for his comments on this issue.”
