“I am motivated to speak on the floor about this particular subject because in our household our parents helped to educate nine of us on a shoestring budget. It became such a passion of mine, as I could see how that has helped each of us to go forward in our lives and to see what it had done for my father and mother. They both came from families where only one grandparent had gone to college. In my father's case, neither of his parents even went to high school. So when I come to the floor--I know you graduated from that large school of yours, with eight in the graduating class--you can appreciate the importance of the work regarding education, fighting hard to make sure every family is like the Landrieu family or Reid family--at least having a chance for a good education. If we write good laws and policies, it happens. If we don't, it doesn't.”
