“I think we are all actually concerned about the issue of human cloning, and certainly the representations by the doctor from Chicago who stated he intends to pursue a course of commercializing human cloning has caused us to need to accelerate addressing this as a public policy matter. It is appropriately an issue that should be addressed at the level of the Congress of the United States. It should be spoken to by the people's representatives and not left to a regulatory environment such as the FDA for a determination, because it is a matter of dramatic import to our culture and to our scientific community. There is no question but that the concept of cloning a human is unethical, inappropriate and wrong. We don't have to delve very far into the history of this century to see the horror that can result from a society which allows itself to pursue a course of creating humans or designing a human race not based on God's will but based on the determination of a political decision or a scientific community. Obviously, the Nazi government, in its seeking of a master race, represents one of the true horrors of the history of mankind.”
