One good result followed the conduct of the Free Church; it furnished an occasion for making the people of Scotland thoroughly acquainted with the character of slavery, and for arraying against the system the moral and religious sentiment of that country.
Douglass notes that the Free Church's controversial actions inadvertently educated the Scottish public about slavery, turning moral sentiment against the institution.
