this Member is in support of H.R. 4386, the Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention and Treatment Act of 2000. The American Cancer Society estimates that within his home state of Nebraska, approximately 1,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and nearly 300 will die as a result of breast cancer. We must provide this enhanced Medicaid matching funds to our states to continue to promote early detection and prevention of breast and cervical cancer. The five-year survival rate is over 95 percent if breast cancer can be detected early. Because only 5-10 percent of breast cancers are due to heredity, early detection must be made available to all women. Mr. Speaker, this Member encourages his colleagues to continue to support the early detection and prevention of breast and cervical cancer and support H.R. 4386.
