The responsibility for long-term stewardship of this site and the transportation and removal of solidified waste must be established immediately. This amendment does just that. The West Valley Demonstration Project was a creation of the Federal Government to deal with over 600,000 gallons of highly radioactive waste generated as a result of the nuclear fuel reprocessing effort, over two-thirds of which came from the Federal nuclear weapons facilities. This amendment directs the Secretary of Energy to provide to Congress a plan to take over responsibility of this site.
