I agree with the Senator absolutely. That ad should be identified; that it was clearly part of the campaign. I am not any more fooled than anybody else. However, we are driven to that kind of chicanery by the present law. My solution--and I am speaking clearly just for myself and not for anybody else on this side--would be to repeal the present law and allow the campaigns to go back to a degree of honesty. I do say to the Senator: I believe that under the present ruling of the Court the statement by the Senator from Kentucky is correct. The Court would rule that since the magic words were not in that ad it would in fact not be considered a campaign ad under the legal definition. I agree with the Senator. The legal definition is artificial and improper. But I would solve it in ways other than passing the McCain-Feingold. I thank my friend.
