On the recordSeptember 29, 1997
during the hearings we have held in the Governmental Affairs Committee there have been a number of headline-grabbing witnesses who have appeared before us. Unfortunately, when we got to the phase of the hearings where we were discussing this issue, the television cameras all left the room and the press tables all became vacant. In that atmosphere I was able to say some things that I maybe wouldn't have otherwise said because I knew no one would say anything. It is a bit like the question, When a tree falls in the forest and nobody is there to hear it does it make any sound? But there was one witness that appeared who made a lot of sound and whose statements are so apropos I have taken the floor to read most of them into the Record. His full statement is available to anyone who wants to go into the committee. I will not take the time to read the full statement here, but for the Senators who participated in this debate I think hearing some of the comments this man made will be particularly enlightening.
