We strive in vain to look beyond the heights.

We are here to erect this statue to his memory because of the unnumbered blessings to America and to the people of every race and clime which have followed his discovery.

To this man, more than to any other, are we indebted for the supreme fact that ninety millions of people are at this hour, in the loftiest sense of the expression, fellow-citizens of a common country.

Great evils often result from hasty legislation, rarely from the delay which follows full discussion and deliberation.
