Essentially the letter states that he, Mr. Perciasepe, Assistant Administrator for Water in the Environmental Protection Agency, is deeply concerned about the amendment offered by Senator Gregg. He says it would upset the careful balance the committee has drafted. It would severely hamper enforcement of the Safe Drinking Water Act and could bring progress on drinking water protection to a grinding halt. Drinking water systems across the country would no longer be held responsible for providing basic drinking water safeguards, such as protection against microbiological contaminants and lead.
