Clearly, we both want to solve the marriage tax penalty. It is my judgment that we are going to pass legislation this week--I hope so. There will be a couple of amendments. It is normal and proper in the Senate for Senators who think they can improve upon a bill to offer amendments. I certainly hope we can dispose of the issue this week. I expect that to happen. I hope so. In doing so, obviously, we want to do what is right. When you do something, you should do your darndest to make sure you do it right the first time so you don't have to correct mistakes later on. I am wondering why it would not make more sense to address all of the marriage tax penalty problems in the code in this bill rather than only a few. As the Senator knows, there are about 65 provisions in the Tax Code, the consequence of which sometimes results in a marriage tax penalty for some married couples--not all but for some.
