The SAFE Port Act demonstrated that the Finance Committee and Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, together with the Commerce Committee, could work together to enact strong legislation to secure our borders and protect the trade-based economic security of our country. That legislation is strong precisely because it was the product of the Finance Committee's focus on customs functions and commercial operations, coupled with the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee's focus on border security and the Commerce Committee's expertise relating to our Nation's seaports.”
