Today, we have celebrated, in some respects, the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Medgar Wiley Evers who, in his lifetime, was misunderstood by a number of Americans. But here we are 40 years from that date on the floor of Congress, many people watching us who probably had not been afforded the right to vote when he was assassinated, but this is the majesty and honor of this country that we serve in that, believe it or not, that hands who pick elected officials who used to pick cotton can now pick Members of Congress. It is in that spirit that we offer this resolution not only for Medgar Wiley Evers, but also for his widow, Myrlie Evers, who has carried on his life and legacy, his spirit and his enthusiasm for making this country a better place.
