Public transit plays a uniquely important role for communities of color. In 2017, APTA reported that more than 60 percent of riders are minorities, such as Black Americans and Hispanics, and during the pandemic, transit provided a lifeline for essential workers, many of whom are minorities, to get to and from their jobs, while also providing critical assistance to minority-owned small businesses.
