“did those who supported tax cuts last summer as part of the balanced budget agreement, and oppose them today, last year raid the Social Security fund when they voted for tax cuts? Why was it that last year the tax cuts that were passed while the budget was in a deficit were not a threat to Social Security, but tax cuts while the budget is in surplus are? This is just goofy, Mr. Speaker. The other side is counting yet again on their hopes that seniors will not know the facts, so they can scare them just like they did 2 years ago about cuts in Medicare. Those cuts turned out to be actually increases in Medicare. Even goofier is their obvious bad faith in opposing tax cuts this year, along with their argument that billions and billions of dollars of new spending they support does not raid Social Security. Well, my friends on the other side of the aisle, which is it? Is spending on education, health care, welfare, and the environment a "raid" on the Social Security trust fund or not?”
