Not only is small business the backbone of the economy, as Members have said so eloquently today, but it is increasingly the backbone of opportunity. It may be the only source of opportunity for so many people in our country: for single moms, who will not have an opportunity to get a postgraduate education; or for people reentering the workforce after raising kids; or people coming from distressed neighborhoods or disadvantaged backgrounds. They do not have the same kind of opportunities that other people may have, but they can start a small business.
