This typical American family, and this is not all that different from the family I grew up in during the 1950's. In fact, when I was growing up in the 1950's, the average family, the largest single payment that they made was for their house payment. Today the typical family, according to the National Taxpayers Union, pays more in taxes, we are talking about total taxes, they pay more in taxes than they do for food, clothing, and shelter combined. That is why the typical American family is being squeezed so much and why this tax relief package we are talking about is so important.
