DTE Energy is out of control. They are requesting another outrageous rate hike, just days after State regulators approved another $242 million increase, an increase of 4.6 percent per customer. These are our residents getting their utility costs increased. Our families can't afford higher rates with more power outages that wipe out groceries, spoil our medicines in our refrigerator, and leave our neighbors without critical medical services, all because DTE in Michigan would rather spend money on campaign contributions than invest in reliability. DTE doesn't even care about reliability because they care about record profits and pay for shareholders and executives. Mr. Speaker, the company made $1.5 billion in profits last year. This is unchecked corporate greed. DTE already charges some of the highest rates in the Nation but provides unreliable service and performs hundreds of thousands of utility shutoffs per year. Mr. Speaker, guess who subsidizes those shutoffs. It is the LIHEAP program, the taxpayers. Enough is enough. DTE Energy needs to be checked and held accountable.
