“I do not believe that human life should be taken, whether it is human life within the womb or whether it is human life after the womb, and so I oppose the principle and practice of abortion on demand. I also strongly oppose the death penalty. Unfortunately, I do not think that there is, generally speaking, a consistency in approach. Some individuals favor the death penalty for virtually any and every case where they want to show that they can get tough on crime. I think that is unfortunate. I also have a tremendous amount of respect for the Constitution of the United States. Today I think we are dishonoring the Constitution. We have certain rights, and we have certain prerogatives, and they extend to matters within our jurisdiction.”
