“Mr. Speaker, we have a real opportunity tonight to do something for the working families in this country. The American public is clamoring for health care relief. It is one of the fundamental concerns of the people of this country. People in this Nation are frightened that they will lose their jobs, that they will lose their health care, that they will be denied health insurance because of a preexisting condition that they may have or that their children may have. Mr. Speaker, the Kassebaum-Kennedy-Roukema bill takes a first step toward addressing these problems. It is a good bill, it is a bipartisan bill. It addresses the needs of the American people. Do not load up the bill with politically contentious issues that are designed to kill this bill, this opportunity for health care reform. It is wrong. It is not what the people of this Nation have sent us here to do. It is not what our jobs are about.”
