On the recordJuly 24, 1997
One of my highest priorities since coming to Congress has been to ensure that our Nation's elderly are able to live with dignity. One can judge the humanity of any society by how it treats its very young, and its very old, the most vulnerable in our society. This is personal to me. My own mother, who until her death at the age of 94, 2 years ago, was able to remain in our own family home only because of the Meals on Wheels Program. And because of that, she lived with dignity and with peace of mind. I think we should treat all the people of America as I would want my mother treated. This is a very important program. It is fiscally and morally sound.
