The Alzheimer's Association of Greater Michigan, which is headquartered in my district, the 14th Congressional District of Michigan, supports more than 140,000 people and their families. According to the Banner Alzheimer Institute, those numbers are going to increase unless treatments or cures are developed. The institute estimates the number of people 65 and older with Alzheimer's will nearly triple to 13.8 million, and the U.S. healthcare costs for Alzheimer's will skyrocket to $1.1 trillion per year, with more than $700 million coming out of Medicare and Medicaid. It is time to treat Alzheimer's as the healthcare disaster that it has become. It is time to take this epidemic seriously.
