On the recordJune 8, 2004
Our Nation mourns the passage of a man who called Americans to their economic purpose and renewed our age-old faith in the limitless possibilities of freedom. With heavy but immensely grateful hearts, our country grieves the passing of President Ronald Reagan and extends our collective thoughts and prayers to his extraordinary wife Nancy and the entire Reagan family. Reflecting today on the hope that President Reagan inspired in America, I am reminded of the story of Benjamin Franklin near the close of the Constitutional Convention. Franklin pointed to the painting behind Washington's chair, a landscape of the Sun just on the horizon and remarked: I have often . . . looked at that sun behind the President without being able to tell whether it was rising or setting. But now . . . I have the happiness to know it is a rising and not a setting sun. Let the record forever show that in a time of great consequence, President Reagan assured an uncertain nation that ours remains always a rising Sun.
