I think both sides are calculating their gains and losses and I think fairly soon the time will come when they will coincide in deciding that it's in their interest to end this round of the conflict.

Well, it is a big step forward because the violence has ended and that's critically important. The longer it goes on with more fighting and dying, the harder it is to solve any problem.
When I first went to the Middle East, I went to 17 countries and I met with the leaders there many, many times, and every time they would criticize American policy, I would ask what do you think our policy should be?
I think it's unfair and unwise. Think for a moment of what Senator McConnell did. He persuaded 96 percent of the Republicans in the Senate to vote for a bill that had the support of only 17 percent of the American people.
Peace cannot be imposed from the outside, unless you do it by overwhelming force of arms, which is obviously not the case here. The parties have to want peace themselves.
