I knew Ed Muskie--not well, but I knew him. I knew him working here as a staff member. We were very scared of him. He was a presence. He was a force. He was indeed a great man. He is the classic American story--a classic American story we need to remind ourselves of. He was the son of a Polish immigrant tailor in a small town called Rumford on the Androscoggin River in western Maine. Then he went on to Cornell Law School through the generosity of individuals and scholarships because he had no resources of his own.
