We’ve given up long ago trying to control what Donald Trump says or what he thinks and, you know, unfortunately, he’s not going to go away quietly. I don’t think not too many of us expected that he would. But I believe there’s going to be a real battle for the soul of the republican party that’s going to last for years. This is not an easy thing.

I think there's no question that America would be better off if the president would resign or be removed from office and if Mike Pence, the vice president of the United States, would conduct a peaceful transition of power over the next 13 days until President Biden is sworn in.
Right in the middle of that meeting with our security team, I got a phone call from House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, who was calling me, saying that he and Speaker Pelosi and Senator Schumer were all together in an undisclosed bunker they'd been spirited off to at some undisclosed location, that the U.S. Capitol police was overwhelmed, that there was no federal law enforcement presence, and that the leaders of Congress were pleading with me, as the governor of Maryland, for assistance from Maryland's National Guard and state police.
More and more Republicans every day are coming out saying, look, we're in the middle of two twin crises. This COVID-19 is spreading all across the country. Hospitals are overflowing people are dying and our economy is collapsing. And the president is tweeting all day and night about beating Joe Biden. We're not going to make up for 5 million votes in all of those states. It was a pretty overwhelming victory at this point.
I'm not sure there's a logical explanation for it, quite frankly. And I don't think it's helpful.
I don't think the President is listening to those folks all the time. And, you know, I just think they're concerned, I would imagine that sometimes they'll have a productive meeting.
It's not accurate to say there's plenty of testing out there and the governors should just get it done. That's just not being straightforward.
