tonight we rise again for the next hour in an attempt to draw attention to and spread some light upon the longest-standing political dispute in the Western world. The issue that we put before the American people tonight is the issue, once again, of Northern Ireland. During the course of the next hour we will have an opportunity to discuss this issue and to speak forcefully to the issues that still bedevil those six counties in the northeast of Ireland. We are reminded tonight that this geographic area is comprised of similar size to the State of Connecticut and is inhabited by 1.5 million people. This week I was fortunate enough to have been invited by the Speaker, Speaker Foley, to attend a meeting with the prime minister of Great Britain, John Major. During the course of that meeting we had a free exchange of ideas, which I hope will be helpful during the course of this debate.
