It is time for a fresh and imaginative program to resolve the problems of our Nation's timber industry - and to meet the desperate housing needs of millions of Americans.

I come to this valley in this fair today asking you to join me in this great national effort to rebuild the strength of America here and around the world.

We will step up the effort to clear our slums, renew our cities, and expand other housing programs.

We will greatly expand our current efforts to apply modern science and technology to both the discovery of new uses for wood and the development of more efficient methods of timber production and cultivation.

It is time for a program which encourages the construction of decent homes for all Americans - rather than a program which retreats from growth and progress.

The hard, tough question for the next decade, for this or any other group of Americans, regardless of their party, is whether we or the Communist world can best demonstrate the vitality of our system.

To rebuild American prestige now will not be easy.

I think it should move with us.

It cannot be done overnight by a new administration.
