“it has been said that fanaticism consists of redoubling your efforts when you have forgotten your aim. The aim of the Republican Party is to reduce the deficit. They have forgotten what they were aiming at, and that is why the freshmen Republican foot soldiers have been revolting against their Gingrichian generals over the last 24 hours because the budget they have here on the floor increases the deficit. They have forgotten their Holy Grail of reducing the Federal deficit. And why? Why? As the new majority leader in the Senate said today, because we do not want to touch the tax breaks for the rich. So, in other words, they have given up on the Holy Grail of reducing the deficit in order to protect the crown jewel of tax breaks for the rich. Now, I think if the American people understand this debate, they would want a no tonight on this Republican rejection of a balanced budget.”
