I was shocked today to come in and hear about the death of our colleague, the gentleman from Virginia (Mr. Bateman). He was for many years my colleague, for the last 2 years my office mate and neighbor; and I spent many times walking to and from this Chamber with him. He was a gentle and kind man, and all of us are diminished by his death. I want to express my deep sense of grief and extend my sympathies to his family and those who have worked with him.
