Mr. President, I thank my colleague for sharing this moment with me on the Senate floor and allowing me to work closely with him to present this bill to the Senate today. He has worked on this for several years, and I am pleased to join him for any number of reasons. One thing I wish to mention before I share the reading of this prayer with him is that the official World War II museum happens to be located in New Orleans, LA. It was initiated by the great historian Stephen Ambrose. It has been promoted by an extraordinarily stellar group of civic and political leaders in our Nation. Former Senator Stevens and Senator Inouye joined arms together as brothers in the Senate and helped us to establish this official museum. It is almost complete. On the eve of D-day, it is particularly striking that the two of us would be here to remember this prayer and to say to the country that this prayer, in our view, should be on the memorial here in DC. I am also hoping, just as a suggestion, that it will be placed somewhere significantly in this fabulous, extraordinary, beautifully designed and beautifully executed museum that tells the story of the war--not how it was won but why it was fought. Why it was fought is the most important lesson for our country and the people of the world to know. Some of that is expressed in this prayer. More of that is expressed in the museum itself.…
