my Republican colleagues may not like the truth, but they cannot run from it. The truth is that by defeating the Green amendment, what they are saying to some of the thousands of soldiers from my district in the Iraqi theater today, that if they come back home to Texas and take advantage of the Troops to Teachers program passed by Congress to encourage them to become teachers, then their Social Security benefits are going to be reduced or eliminated. That is wrong. It is unfair. It discourages good people from going into the teaching profession. And I can tell Members, the school districts in my district value highly having these retired Army soldiers teaching in the classrooms. The other side may not like the facts, but they are going to have to accept them.
