the decisions we are making in the Senate today say a lot about our values, who we are, what we care about. Earlier today, the Vice President cast the tie-breaking vote that enabled wealthy investors to cut their taxes by tens of billions of dollars. It does virtually nothing for ordinary Americans. If you look at this bill, for the next 5 years, the very little help working people get gets smaller and smaller, while the help for people who live off of their wealth gets bigger and bigger. So this bill values wealth over work. It is just that simple. Now we have an amendment from the Senator from Massachusetts that is about helping people who are hurting today. This is not an abstraction. I have been all over this country. Anywhere you go in America, you meet people who are looking for work, and they cannot find it. These are good, salt-of-the-earth people. They want to work. They have worked all their lives. There is no job available for them. They are trying to feed their families, trying to pay the rent. These are people who cannot find a job because this administration--President Bush's administration--has killed over 2 million jobs. They are going from factory to factory and store to store trying to find work--whether it is at a textile mill, drycleaner, or McDonald's. They cannot find work. They have been looking for months.…
